About Salem, Massachusetts

Salem is a harbor city of 44,480 people on Massachusetts Bay. Roger Conant led a company of fishermen down from Cape Ann in 1626 and settled at a place called Naumkeag. Two years later John Endecott arrived to take charge, and the settlement was renamed Salem. In 1637 the first militia muster drilled on Salem Common, and the town grew around its busy waterfront.

Salem's captains sailed farther than most. In the early nineteenth century the city was a leader in world trade, and its ships were the first to open commerce with Africa, China, Russia, Japan and Australia. That wealth built the wharves and brick mansions of the old port. On March 23, 1836, Salem accepted a charter and became the second city in Massachusetts.

“Many a Salem family of today looks back with pride to a member who figured as cabin boy, ordinary seaman, able seaman, mate, master, supercargo or owner.”
George Granville Putnam, 1921
  • The witch trials of 1692The trials made Salem famous, but most of the accused lived in Salem Village, a farming parish outside the harbor town. Studying the court records in 1861, an Essex Institute writer found warrants for thirty-two people; thirty were arrested, all but five from the village. Nineteen were hanged at Proctor's Ledge, near the foot of Gallows Hill, a site identified in 2016 and now a memorial.
  • Only men who rounded the CapesIn 1799 a group of Salem ship captains and supercargoes formed the East India Marine Society. The objects these sailors carried home became the start of the Peabody Essex Museum. Joseph Peabody by himself owned eighty-three vessels in his lifetime.
  • The bridge Washington watchedOn February 26, 1775, townspeople raised the draw of the North Bridge, and Colonel Leslie's British troops turned back. A year later, while touring the northern states, George Washington dismounted to watch its draw open.
  • A harbor fort begun in 1643Work on Salem's first fort on Winter Island started in 1643. Named Fort Pickering for Timothy Pickering, a Salem native, it stood guard over the harbor from the time of the Anglo-Dutch Wars until World War II. The frigate Essex was built on the island in 1799. The fort joined the National Register in 1973.
  • Samuel McIntire's woodworkThe Salem builder Samuel McIntire carved the interior of the Joshua Ward House, a three-story brick house of 1784 that was among the first brick houses in town. Its staircase is the oldest of his that survives. In 1809 a square brick house attributed to McIntire was built for Thomas March Woodbridge, the owner of a tannery in town.
