About Lynn, Massachusetts

Lynn is a city of 101,253 people in Essex County, on Massachusetts Bay about 10 miles northeast of Boston. Edmund Ingalls began English settlement on Naumkeag land in 1629, when the place was called Saugus. In 1637 it was renamed Lynn for King's Lynn in England, the hometown of its first official minister, the Reverend Samuel Whiting. Reading, Lynnfield, Saugus, Swampscott and Nahant were later split off from old Lynn, and on May 14, 1850, Lynn became a city.

Shoes built the city. Philip Kertland, counted as Lynn's first shoemaker, arrived in 1635, and by 1795 the town made 170,000 pairs a year by hand, each one cut, lasted and burnished by a single worker at home. The first machines arrived in June 1862, in the Shepard Street shop of Stephen Oliver Jr. By the early 1900s, 234 factories here made more than a million pairs a day and led the world, until the last shoe factory closed in 1981.

“The whole country seemed to have their eyes momentarily turned on Lynn.”
History of Lynn, 1865
  • The strike of 1860Lynn's shoemakers walked out on February 22, 1860, when about 3,000 of them marched through town and handed in their tools to protest pay cuts. In a week the strike had spread to 25 more towns, and roughly 20,000 New England workers had quit their benches. The New England Shoemakers Strike ended that April with modest gains for the workers, including raises.
  • Where General Electric beganTwo years later the G.A.R. Hall and Museum, built for Union veterans, opened under its electric lights. The company joined Edison's in 1892 to form General Electric, with Coffin as first president. Its Lynn works built aircraft engines in World War II and became a jet engine plant.
  • Rebuilt after the 1889 fireIn November 1889 a fire broke out in the Mower brothers' shoe factory and leveled 296 buildings, including 142 homes, four banks, four newspaper offices and the railroad depot in Central Square. Lynn rebuilt quickly. In 1891 the Mowers raised a brick block where their old factory had stood, the Lynn Bank Block brought the Colonial Revival style downtown that year, and the eight-story Vamp Building rose as a shoe factory in 1903.
  • Frederick Douglass, 1841 to 1848Frederick Douglass reached Lynn in 1841 while he was still a fugitive from slavery, and that same year he was thrown off a train at the Central Square depot. During his years here he wrote the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, his first autobiography and the book he is best known for. He lived in Lynn with his wife and five children until 1848.
  • High Rock and its towerMoll Pitcher, a fortune-teller whose visitors came from near and far, lived at the foot of High Rock until she died in 1813, aged seventy-five. The Hutchinson Family Singers later made the hill their home, and by 1851 Jesse Hutchinson had built two Gothic Revival cottages there, along with a wooden tower.
