About Southwest Ranches, Florida
Southwest Ranches is a town of 7,607 people in Broward County, at the eastern edge of the Everglades. In 1996 Pembroke Pines asked the county's legislative delegation to annex the unincorporated land between Flamingo Road and State Road 25, from Griffin Road to Sheridan Street. That November, hundreds of residents crowded into Pembroke Pines City Hall to object and to demand a city of their own.
The Legislature answered in 1997 with a bill that set a vote for March 2000. Residents could then choose Pembroke Pines, Davie or a new city. The homeowners association asked Dr. Milan Dluhy of Florida International University for a feasibility study, and it held a parade and picnic on July 3, 1999, to declare the area's independence. That summer a committee wrote a charter, using Weston's as its model. On March 14, 2000, residents voted overwhelmingly against annexation. The town became official on July 25, 2000, when its first council was elected, and it was the county's 30th incorporated place.
- Named in 1999A naming contest drew 122 suggestions, and the top five went to a vote on October 12, 1999. Residents picked Southwest Ranches because the area is full of horse ranches and lies in the southwestern corner of Broward County.
- A Tequesta burial groundFor almost 2,000 years, until the Spanish took Florida, the Tequesta were the native people of the southeast. In the 1970s archeologists excavated one of their burial sites here, on a former Everglades tree island, and found artifacts more than a thousand years old. The town also has an old Indian trading post.
- Districts won the voteThe fiercest argument on the charter committee was over districts. Most members wanted council seats open to anyone in town, but voters had the final word on June 6, 2000. When they approved the charter, they also chose districts. Council members are still elected by the whole town, but each one must live in the district he or she represents.
- Room for horsesTown law bars homes on lots under an acre, and it generally keeps out streetlights and sidewalks to protect the town's rural way of life. Riders, cyclists and walkers share miles of trails. One of the seven open-space parks holds a show ring and a schooling ring, plus the Equestrian Oasis, an art piece that gives horses water.
- A church became town hallFrom its founding until 2012, the town worked out of a modular office at the headquarters of the South Broward Drainage District. That year, led by Vice Mayor Doug McKay, the town renovated a former church and made it Southwest Ranches' first permanent town hall.
