About Surprise, Arizona
Surprise is a city of 143,148 people in Maricopa County. Flora Mae Statler founded it in 1938 as a temperance community. Her father, Charles Gillett, was an Arizona pioneer who had helped found Glendale and owned land there and in the Verde Valley. When her one-square-mile parcel was divided into lots for low-cost farmworker homes, it held only a few houses and a gas station.
The settlement grew enough to incorporate as a city in 1960. Its growth sped up near the end of the century: the 2000 census counted 30,848 people, and ten years later the figure had climbed to 117,517, nearly four times as many.
- Two stories behind the nameStatler's daughter said her mother chose the name because she doubted the place would ever amount to much and would be surprised if it did. Others point out that pioneers often named new towns after their old ones, and Statler's husband, the developer and state legislator Homer C. Ludden, came from Surprise, Nebraska.
- A founder found in 2010For years, city officials gave Ludden the credit for founding Surprise. Then, in 2010, property records showed that Statler owned the land before she ever met him, and she took her place as the city's founder.
- City Hall on an old airfieldCity Hall was built where Luke Air Force Base once kept its auxiliary airfield No. 3. The lines of the old runways still show up in photos taken from the air.
- Spring training since 2002The city's Recreation Campus gained Surprise Stadium in 2002, a ballpark with 10,714 seats. Each spring the Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers train there, and the Surprise Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League play there too.
- Sun City Grand, 1996Del Webb's Sun City Grand, a community for adults 45 and older, was founded inside Surprise in 1996, and its last homes were finished in 2005. Sun City and Sun City West are unincorporated places run by community associations, but the Grand belongs to an incorporated city.
