About Peoria, Arizona
Peoria is a city of 190,985 people in the Salt River Valley, mostly in Maricopa County with a northern piece in Yavapai County. After his work on the Arizona Canal, William John Murphy set out to recruit families for a new community, and many of those he found came from Peoria, Illinois. Albert J. and Elizabeth Straw arrived first, in November 1886, and the Hanna, Copes and McMillan families soon joined them.
In 1887 Grand Avenue was laid out diagonally across the young towns of Alhambra, Glendale and Peoria, and it became the main road from Phoenix to the Vulture Mine. A post office opened on August 4, 1888, for just 27 people, and the settlers filed their plot map with the county recorder on May 24, 1897, naming the town for the city they had left. A Chamber of Commerce, formed about 1919, handled local affairs until residents incorporated Peoria on June 7, 1954. The new town had 1,925 residents, and its seven-member council first met on June 14.
- Old Main opened in 1922Peoria High School began in 1919 with one teacher, in the back of a store that was also the post office. In 1922 its 50 students moved into Old Main, a Spanish Colonial Revival building with indoor plumbing that was the largest structure in town. The school says no other Arizona high school kept admitting Japanese American students through World War II. Old Main was restored from 2012 to 2014 and joined the National Register in 2019.
- Central School, built in 1906Before 1906, Peoria's children had studied in an empty brick store on Washington Street and then in a one-room schoolhouse finished in 1891. Central School went up in 1906, three more classroom buildings rose beside it by 1910, and a building with an auditorium and four classrooms opened in 1918, when 190 students attended. Teenagers had to travel to Glendale High School until the board approved a high school of Peoria's own in 1919.
- A depot that moved to ScottsdaleThe Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix Railway laid a spur through Peoria between 1891 and 1895. The town's small depot stood on 83rd Avenue near Grand Avenue until Scottsdale bought it in 1972, and it now sits at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park.
- Downtown takes shape, 1918 to 1920The three-story Edwards Hotel opened in 1918. Three buildings followed in 1920: the Mabel Hood building in May, at the corner of 83rd Avenue and Washington Street, then John L. Meyer's "flatiron" building in June and O.O. Fuel's Paramount Theatre in July. From 1950 until 2004 the theater served as Fire Station 1.
- Two teams, one ballparkFrom the late 1970s to 1990 the Milwaukee Brewers trained minor leaguers at the small Greenway Sports Complex on 83rd Avenue. The city approved a new complex on that ground in 1990, and when the Peoria Sports Complex was finished in 1994 it became the county's first spring training site shared by two major league clubs, the San Diego Padres and the Seattle Mariners.
