About Youngtown, Arizona
Youngtown, 18 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix, is a Maricopa County town of 7,056 people. In 1954 a pair of developers purchased 320 farm acres that were part of Frances Greer's ranch, planning a community open only to retirees, the first such place in the United States. Ben Schleifer, whose idea it was to build an active retirement community, designed the town, and its founders named it Youngtown as a joke.
In 1955 builders finished 125 homes, and buyers picked up about 85 more lots. The town incorporated in 1960, and that year the nation's first AARP chapter was organized in Youngtown.
- On national TV in 1957Two years after the first homes went up, an episode of the national program Wide Wide World featured Youngtown. The broadcast put the retirement town in front of the whole country, and more people began moving in.
- Room to grow in 1959When West Valley farmer Jim Boswell II sold land to Del Webb for Sun City in 1959, he held on to the land west of 111th Avenue, from Alabama Avenue to Grand Avenue, so Youngtown would have space to expand. Sun City opened on Youngtown's east side on January 1, 1960.
- Age limits ended in 1999Youngtown long set age limits on who could live there. In 1996 the town used that rule to refuse to let a 16-year-old stay longer, and Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods looked into the case. He decided the age ordinance could not be enforced, and in 1999 the town repealed its age restrictions.
- Grew to 7,056 by 2020Youngtown had 7,056 residents at the 2020 census, up from 6,156 in 2010. The town takes up 1.5 square miles along the Agua Fria River. El Mirage lies on its west side, Glendale on its south and Sun City on its east.
