About Sun City, Arizona
Sun City is a retirement community of 39,931 people. It lies 16 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix, in Maricopa County. Before Del Webb came, this was farmland around Marinette, a railroad water stop. Two Wisconsin men, R. P. Davie and a partner, each bought 640 acres along the Santa Fe line in 1892 and named the stop after the Wisconsin town they came from. A general store, houses and, in 1912, a post office grew up around it.
In June 1959 the Del E. Webb Development Co. paid over $20 million to James G. Boswell II for 20,000 acres, made up of his ranches at Marinette and Santa Fe. Webb opened his company's first retirement community there on January 1, 1960. Five model homes stood ready, along with a golf course, a recreation center and a shopping center. About 100,000 people came that first weekend, ten times what the planners expected, and Time magazine made it a cover story.
- Sugar beets, cotton and lettuceDavie planted sugar beets in 1918, but the soil could not make them sweet enough. In 1920 he sold out to the Southwest Cotton Company, and in 1936 that company sold the land to J. G. Boswell, who raised cotton and lettuce on it. Marinette later became a ghost town. Its name lives on at the Marinette Recreation Center, and the Del Webb Sun Cities Museum keeps a marker that tells its history.
- A house for a nameWebb first called the project the Marinette Retirement Community. He then held a nationwide contest to name it, with a house as the prize, and picked Sun City. The idea spread across the Sun Belt. Sun City West opened late in the 1970s and Sun City Grand late in the 1990s. Sun City Anthem came next in 1999, and Sun City Festival opened its doors in July 2006.
- The feedlot case of 1972As the new homes spread, smell and flies from a nearby cattle feedlot reached them, and Webb sued. In the 1972 ruling, Spur Industries v. Del E. Webb Development Co., the Arizona Supreme Court found the feedlot a public nuisance that could be shut down. Because Webb had chosen to build beside it, the court ordered Webb to cover the feedlot's losses from moving or closing. First-year law students still study the case in property courses.
- Brewers spring trainingDel Webb built Sun City Stadium, and the Sun City Saints, a women's softball team, opened it by winning a doubleheader on June 17, 1971. The Milwaukee Brewers held spring training there from 1973 to 1985. Two later teams used the park: the Senior Professional Baseball Association's Sun City Rays played there in 1990, and the Arizona Fall League's Mesa Solar Sox in 1992 and 1993. The ballpark came down in 1995.
- A town with no school districtTo hold down taxes, the Sun City Home Owners Association campaigned to keep the community out of every school district. The campaign worked, so children living in Sun City attend schools in the nearby Peoria and Dysart districts.
