About Villa Park, Illinois

Villa Park is a village of 22,263 people in DuPage County, west of Chicago. It began as two housing developments laid out by the real estate firm Ballard & Pottinger: Villa Park in 1908 and Ardmore in 1910. The two joined in 1914 and incorporated as the Village of Ardmore. Villa Park residents objected to that name, so in 1917 the village took the name Villa Park instead.

The electric Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad ran through the village. It linked Villa Park to Chicago's Loop and to Wheaton, where the line split toward Aurora and Elgin. Shops and businesses grew up around its stations on Villa Avenue and Ardmore Avenue. Riders drifted away after the Eisenhower Expressway opened, and passenger trains stopped in 1957. The old right-of-way became the Illinois Prairie Path, a trail for hikers and cyclists.

  • Two stations still standingThe railroad's Ardmore Avenue Train Station joined the National Register in 1980, and the Villa Avenue Train Station followed in 1986. Both still stand along the Illinois Prairie Path, where the trains once stopped.
  • Home of the Ovaltine factoryFor much of the twentieth century, the Ovaltine factory ran in Villa Park. The old factory complex has since been turned into loft apartments.
  • Islamic Foundation School, 1986Muslim families in Villa Park founded the Islamic Foundation School in 1986, a sign of the village's growing diversity. It is one of the village's parochial schools, along with St. Alexander Catholic School.
