About West Dundee, Illinois

West Dundee is a village of 7,686 people in Kane County, set on the Fox River opposite East Dundee and Carpentersville. Its start came in 1835, when Elder John Oatman and his wife Nancy opened a tavern and a store, and the settlement grew up around them.

As more settlers arrived, they held a lottery in 1837 to decide who would choose the town's name. Alexander Gardiner won it and called the place Dundee after his hometown in Scotland, and the two places are now sister cities. Another Scot, Allan Pinkerton, opened a cooper's business here in 1843, long before he became a famous detective. The village was incorporated in 1887.

  • The D. Hill Nursery, 1855William Hill started the D. Hill Nursery in 1855 to grow fruit trees. Its land lay north and west of town, and with the Fox River on the east side, the nursery kept West Dundee from spreading for years. It later added evergreens and sent some of them to the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. In time the nursery grew to 900 acres.
  • Thousands of seasonal workersThe nursery made it through the Great Depression by running a cattle feed business, which lasted through World War II. Every year thousands of seasonal workers came to work there. Some traveled out from Chicago on the electric rail, but most of them lived right on the nursery grounds.
  • Annexing the Hill landPart of the Hill land was sold in the 1950s for the Highlands subdivision, and West Dundee annexed it in 1956. The village took in ground west of Illinois 31 in 1957. Royal Lane came next, in 1960, and the Old World subdivision joined in 1966. Afterward the nursery sold its remaining acres and relocated to McHenry County.
  • Spring Hill Mall, 1980Planning for Spring Hill Mall started in 1973, and the 1.1 million-square-foot mall was completed in 1980. By 1982 it had brought an estimated 1,600 jobs, and new subdivisions grew up to the west of it.
  • Underground Railroad refugesHistoric sites fill West Dundee's downtown and the neighborhood around it. Among the restored buildings are some said to have hidden people escaping slavery on the Underground Railroad.
