About East Dundee, Illinois

East Dundee is a village of 3,152 people in Kane County, and a small part of it reaches into Cook County. It sits in the Fox Valley, on land that glaciers and the Fox River carved out long ago. Settlers arrived in 1834, and a year later a Scottish immigrant named Alexander Gardiner gave the settlement the name Dundee.

East Dundee incorporated as a village in 1871, four years after its neighbor West Dundee did the same. The Chicago & North Western line ran right through the middle of town, so local farms could ship their dairy goods and cheese by rail. Today its commercial center is a historic district beside the river, along with the shops on Main Street.

  • From rail line to trailThe Chicago & North Western tracks between Elgin and Crystal Lake were abandoned in the 1980s. The old railroad bed became the Fox River Trail, which runs along the east side of the river through town. In 1984 the village rebuilt its old train depot and reopened it as a tourist center.
  • Santa's Village since 1959The Santa's Village theme park opened in 1959 and ran until 2006. New owners brought it back in 2011 under a new name, Santa's Village AZoosment Park.
  • The Dundee Lumber fireThe village's old feed and coal store later became Dundee Lumber. The building burned down in March 2007.
