About Apache Junction, Arizona
Apache Junction is a city of 38,499 people, most of them in Pinal County, with a small piece reaching into Maricopa County. The place was once called Youngberg, and it was renamed for the crossroads where the Apache Trail met the Old West Highway, below Superstition Mountain. Its Western Apache name is Hagosgeed, and the O'odham Jeweḍ, the Akimel O'odham and the Hohokam all have ties to this ground.
The Apache Trail opened to the public as a scenic byway in 1922. Today State Route 88 follows that old road 45 miles northeast through the Superstitions to Theodore Roosevelt Lake. The 1970 census was the first to count Apache Junction, then an unincorporated village, and it was made a city on November 24, 1978. In October 2021 it annexed ten square miles to the south and now covers 35.1 square miles.
- The Lost Dutchman's goldJacob Waltz, a German immigrant, was said to have found a rich vein of gold in the Superstition Mountains. As he lay dying in Phoenix in 1891, he revealed its location to Julia Thomas, who ran a boarding house and had cared for him. People have searched ever since, but nobody has proved a claim to the mine, and it may be America's best-known lost mine.
- Goldfield, founded in 1893Miners built Goldfield beside Superstition Mountain in 1893. When the vein faulted, the ore turned poorer and the town slowly emptied into a ghost town. Its old buildings were later brought back to life, and visitors now walk its streets off the Apache Trail.
- Apacheland's movie setsApacheland, a Western movie set spread over 1,800 acres, opened here in 1960. Fire swept through it in 1969. Studio sets and other Western pieces pulled from the flames now stand at the Superstition Mountain Museum, which sits along the Apache Trail, together with relics of the Lost Dutchman legend.
- From King's Mountain to SillyThe 2,139-foot peak on the city's edge was first named King's Mountain, for William N. King, who kept a small ranch below it early in the 20th century. In the 1970s a county public works employee named the newly paved road to it Silly Mountain Road, and the name stuck.
