About Queen Creek, Arizona

Queen Creek is a town of 59,519 people at the southeastern edge of the Phoenix metro area, mostly in Maricopa County with a piece in Pinal County. In 1919 C. H. Rittenhouse started the Queen Creek Farms Company, and to ship its produce he built a stop on the railroad. Trains also stopped there on signal to carry riders into Phoenix, and the settlement that grew around the stop was called Rittenhouse until 1947, when residents renamed it Queen Creek.

The new name came from a creek that once ran through Queen Canyon. It was first known as Picket Post Creek and was later renamed for the Silver Queen Mine, though today it is usually a dry arroyo. Queen Creek incorporated as a town on September 5, 1989, and in 2018 it crossed into Pinal County by annexing the Ironwood Crossing neighborhood.

  • School in a cook shackChildren first went to class from 1920 to 1922 in a little board-and-batten building, once the cook shack for crews working for G. R. "Gid" Duncan, a partner of Charles Rittenhouse. The school took Rittenhouse's name, and its classes then moved to a wooden church.
  • Old Main, begun in 1924Builders started on a permanent school in 1924. The red brick building had three rooms set in a U shape, in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, and it was finished in 1925 and took its first students in 1926. At first, children of Mexican descent stayed behind in the old church to learn English, then moved into the brick school's classes.
  • Two classrooms added in 1936In 1936 and 1937, money from the Public Works Administration added two classrooms and brought the restrooms indoors. By 1955 Old Main stood at the center of community life.
  • Chalkboards from the last dayOld Main shut its doors to students in 1982. The San Tan Historical Society struck a deal with the district in 1994 to make the building a museum, and Rittenhouse Elementary School joined the National Register in 1998. Restorers peeling back old paint found hundreds of marks that students had scratched into the bricks, and the slate chalkboards still carry writing from the final day of class.
