About Bay Point, California

Bay Point is a community of 23,896 people in Contra Costa County. It sits on the south shore of Suisun Bay, just west of Pittsburg and northeast of Concord. Its first name was Bella Vista, and later it was called West Pittsburg. People often mixed that name up with the western edge of Pittsburg, which is also unincorporated.

In 1993 residents voted to rename the town Bay Point. The vote brought back an old name once used here. Bay Point has never become a city, so the county sheriff and the California Highway Patrol keep the peace.

  • A church built in 1909Bay Point's church went up in 1909 as a shared project. Local people, the lumber company and the Congregational Conference all worked together to build it.
  • Ambrose Park, a 1947 giftThe local Enes family gave Ambrose Park to the town in 1947. The Ambrose Parks and Recreation District has run the site since 1946. Pittsburg annexed the park in July 2008 so the city could help pay for a new pool. The Ambrose Aquatic Center took the old pool's place and opened its doors on July 4, 2016.
  • One grammar school in 1940In 1940 Ambrose Elementary on Willow Pass Road was the only grammar school in town. Older students went to high school in Pittsburg. Today Bay Point has four public schools. Riverview Middle School was once Pacifica High School, and the others are the Rio Vista, Shore Acres and Bel Air elementary schools.
