About Blackwood, New Jersey
Blackwood is a community of 4,622 people in Gloucester Township, Camden County, about 10 miles from Camden. The area was once known as the head of Timber Creek. John Blackwood Sr., a fuller from Scotland, bought its tavern in 1731. In the early 1750s he added 100 acres that covered the future village site and built mills there, and the settlement took his name as Blackwoodtown.
The crossroads village grew slowly along the Black Horse Pike, and in 1831 it became the seat of township government. In that same year Uriah Norcross made Blackwood the headquarters of his daily stagecoach line between Camden and Cape May. The Camden County Railroad reached the village in 1891, and Blackwood Lake drew summer visitors as a resort from 1891 until 1932.
- An acre for the PresbyteriansJohn Blackwood was a staunch Presbyterian. On October 18, 1751, one month after Mr. Chestnut was ordained as minister, Blackwood gave the congregation an acre of his land for a token two shillings and sixpence. He then took charge of building their church himself.
- Historic district since 1989The old village center joined the National Register on July 27, 1989, as the Blackwood Historic District. It covers Church and Elm streets, Baptist Lane, Central and East Railroad avenues and the Black Horse Pike. Its 42 acres hold 87 contributing buildings, among them the Blackwood First Methodist Episcopal Church, built in 1856 in a mix of the Greek Revival and Italianate styles.
- A college town since 1977Camden County College has its main campus in Blackwood. The college's radio station, WDBK, has been on the air at 91.5 FM since 1977.
