About Turnersville, New Jersey

Turnersville is a community of 3,594 people in Washington Township, Gloucester County, on the South Branch Big Timber Creek. It takes its name from John Turner, one of the early settlers, who opened the first store in the neighborhood in 1800. He began with a small stock of the basic goods a household could not do without, and he kept the store running for forty years, until 1840.

The village grew up on the eastern edge of the township, where the Williamstown and Good Intent turnpike passed near the head of Timber Creek. By 1883 it held two stores, two grist mills and a sawmill, along with a schoolhouse, a Methodist Episcopal church, a blacksmith and a shoemaker.

  • A stone mill before 1800Peter Cheeseman built a stone grist mill here some time before 1800, and it was the first mill of its kind in the area. By 1883 the village had two grist mills working, along with a sawmill.
  • Seventy years without a churchFor seventy years the local Methodists had no building of their own. They worshiped in schoolhouses, private homes and barns, and outdoors in a grove when the summer weather was fair. In 1855 four men formed a building committee: Samuel Sharp, John Turner, and Benjamin and John Prosser. A large church went up that summer, and it was dedicated in the fall of the same year.
  • A Turner at the post officeWhen Turnersville got its own post office, Andrew Turner became the first postmaster, keeping the family name tied to village life. By 1883 the job had passed to Franklin Van Sickler.
