About Carefree, Arizona

Carefree is a town of 3,690 people in Maricopa County, north of Phoenix and Scottsdale. In the mid-1950s two business partners, K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington, laid out the whole place as a master-planned community before anyone lived there. Lots went on sale in 1955, and builders started on the first houses in 1958.

Long before that, the Hohokam lived around Black Mountain, the peak Carefree shares with Cave Creek. It climbs more than 1,000 feet above both towns to 3,398 feet, and signs of the Hohokam there begin about 750 and fade around 1450. In 1984 Carefree incorporated as a town of its own so that neighboring Scottsdale could not annex it.

  • A sundial 90 feet acrossJoe Wong, an architect, and John I. Yellott, a solar engineer, designed the Carefree Sundial, which was finished in 1959 and stands in the Sundial Circle plaza. Its steel frame is clad in anodized copper and aimed at the North Star. The dial is 90 feet wide, and its gnomon rises 35 feet over the plaza and stretches 72 feet. The town calls it the third largest sundial in the Western Hemisphere.
  • A movie studio in the desertFred Graham, an actor, stuntman and Arizona Film Commissioner, opened Fred Graham Studios here in 1968 on 160 acres, with three soundstages and a backlot.
  • Southwestern StudiosUnder the name Southwestern Studios, the lot hosted The New Dick Van Dyke Show on Stage 1 in the early 1970s and Bob Hope's last feature film, Cancel My Reservation. Its western street, first built for Bill Cosby's Man and Boy, later appeared in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. The studio was later called Carefree Studios, and in 1999 it was demolished to make room for shops and homes.
  • Hugh Downs and FoursomeThe broadcaster Hugh Downs lived in Carefree and used the local studio to produce and host two pilot episodes of Foursome in 1973 and 1974. The show mixed a game show with a talk show. In one episode Janet Leigh, Robert Culp, Jo Anne Worley and Alan Sues played tennis.
  • Carefree Highway, 1974On a drive from Flagstaff to Phoenix, Gordon Lightfoot passed a road sign pointing the way to Carefree. He jotted the words down and carried the note in his suitcase for eight months before turning it into a song. Carefree Highway climbed the Billboard Hot 100 as high as No. 10. The real road, part of State Route 74, begins at Tom Darlington Drive and heads west for roughly 30 miles, ending at Lake Pleasant Parkway in Peoria.
