About Cave Creek, Arizona
Cave Creek is a town of 4,892 people in Maricopa County, in the Sonoran Desert 33 miles north of downtown Phoenix. Mounted soldiers from Fort McDowell made the first settlement here in 1870. Three years later, in 1873, prospectors who had crossed over from the Bradshaw Mountains struck gold nearby.
The settlement took its name from a cave that sat beside the creek where it began. That creek still flows south along the western side of town and on into Phoenix, where it vanishes into the Salt River valley. Cave Creek remained unincorporated for more than a century, until it became a town in 1986.
- Spur Cross Ranch saved in 2000In 2000 the town joined the state of Arizona and Maricopa County to purchase the 2,154 acres of Spur Cross Ranch for $21 million. The desert there held unusual cacti and rock formations, along with hundreds of artifacts left behind by the Hohokam people. The land became a Maricopa County park.
- History on the museum groundsThe Cave Creek Museum has gathered several of the town's old buildings in one place: the First Church of Cave Creek, the Golden Reef Stamp Mill and the Tubercular Cabin. That cabin has earned a place on the National Register. More of the town's original structures stand at Frontier Town.
- A service station turned restaurantThe Cave Creek Service Station, listed on the National Register, found a second life as a restaurant. The old Cave Creek Inn was converted into a restaurant as well.
- A council race settled by chanceWhen a June 2009 vote for Town Council ended in a tie, Cave Creek broke it with a game of chance, a method the Arizona State Constitution permits, and the result drew news coverage. In November 2013 the council adopted "Where the Wild West Lives" as the town motto.
