About New River, Arizona
New River is a community of 17,290 people in northern Maricopa County, about 36 miles north of downtown Phoenix. It is named for a seasonal wash that feeds the Agua Fria River system. Lord Darrell Duppa, the man who gave Phoenix its name, started the settlement in 1868 as a place for stagecoaches to stop.
Later the old Black Canyon Highway climbed north from Phoenix, and its paved surface ran out here, so travelers bound for Prescott finished the trip on dirt. The road from Phoenix to Flagstaff was completed in May 1956. Interstate 17 took the old highway's place, and its last stretch opened to traffic in August 1978.
- Too rural to be a townResidents have tried again and again to form a town so they could control zoning and growth. In 1979 they gathered enough signatures, but a county judge threw out the election because New River was too rural to qualify. A 1995 plan covering about 120 square miles failed when Phoenix refused to approve it, and a 1999 push died quickly. A joint campaign with Desert Hills began in 2017 and ended in June 2019, again without Phoenix's approval.
- The man who named PhoenixDuppa was born in France in 1832, studied at Cambridge and spoke five languages. He said he first came to Prescott in 1863. With his friend Jack Swilling he helped found Phoenix and chose its name, after the bird that rises from its ashes, because the new canals followed old Hohokam ones. He is also credited with naming Tempe, and he built a ranch north of Phoenix.
- Gavilan Peak, named in the 1880sThe 2,980-foot peak got its name in the 1880s, when the U.S. Cavalry fought the Apaches in the area. In Spanish the word gavilan refers to a sparrow hawk, while in Apache it simply means a hawk. Daisy Mountain, at 3,176 feet, also rises within the community.
- Water by the truckloadFor years many households here had no piped water. State-licensed haulers filled their tanks from fire hydrants in Phoenix and drove the water out to homes. Since August 2018 the haulers have loaded up at a filling station run by Epcor instead.
