About Chuluota, Florida

Chuluota is a community of 2,524 people in Seminole County, east of Oviedo. Its first American settlers came soon after the Civil War, many of them from North Carolina, traveling by ox cart. They planted orange groves, raised cattle, ran a sawmill and tapped the pine forests for turpentine, and a railroad carried their passengers and freight.

Around 1892 Henry Flagler formed the Chuluota Land Company to sell land his Florida East Coast Railroad had acquired, and the company platted the town as a rival to Orlando for the area's trade. The Great Freeze of 1894 and 1895 then wiped out most of the citrus groves. The 1920s land boom revived the town somewhat, but the bust that followed, Flagler's death and the Great Depression of the 1930s left most of the plats empty, and the population slowly shrank. The old lots finally filled in the 1950s, when a postwar housing boom brought small, affordable homes for working families.

  • A Creek nameRobert A. Mills, one of the community's early developers, gets credit for picking the name, which may have belonged to the original Seminole village. It comes from the Creek word "Chuluoto," and people translate it as "Isle of Pines," "Pine Island," "Land of Lakes and Pines" or "beautiful place." Flagler's land company kept the name around 1892.
  • A schoolhouse from 1898The Chuluota School opened in 1898 in a one-room wooden building. A more modern elementary school went up in 1925 and taught children until June 1948, when it became the volunteer fire station. Since 1996 the building has housed Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10139, and most residents think of it as the community center.
  • One thousand homes since 2003New developers drew up plans to bring Chuluota back in the 1960s, and the growth has kept coming. An estimated one thousand new homes have gone up in the area since 2003.
