About University, Orange County, Florida

University is a community of 45,284 people in Orange County, about 15 miles east of downtown Orlando, and it grew up around the University of Central Florida. Most of the land for the school was once cow pasture crawling with rattlesnakes. Frank Adamucci, a contractor from New Jersey, said he would give away half of his land if someone paid for the rest. Then 89 Central Florida citizens backed a $1 million bank loan to buy it.

Classes started on October 7, 1968, before the first building was finished, and students signed up for courses at folding tables. The school was first called Florida Technological University. The Census Bureau first counted University as a place of its own in 2010, when it had 31,084 people, and by 2020 the count had grown to 45,284.

  • A highway link in 1990In October 1990 a $100 million project carried the East-West Expressway out to State Road 50, just south of the campus. Colonial Drive, as State Road 50 is also called, now forms the community's southern edge.
  • Optics center since 1987CREOL was founded at UCF in 1987 as a specialized center and later grew into the College of Optics and Photonics. In January 2018 the university opened Research I, a building with 79 laboratories and 84 offices for work in nanoscience, advanced materials, photonics and energy.
  • A stadium for 45,301 fansWork on UCF's on-campus football stadium began in 2006, and it opened in September 2007 on a 25 acre site. It seats up to 45,301 people and has hosted several conference championship games. Once known as FBC Mortgage Stadium, it became the Acrisure Bounce House in 2025.
  • Spirit Splash at the pondSince the 1990s, UCF Homecoming has included Spirit Splash. Each year thousands of students charge into the Reflecting Pond for the Pond Rush, followed by live performances.
