About Conestee, South Carolina
Thomas I. Charles gave up his law practice in Greenville to come back to Conestee. He took charge of the Conestee mills as president and treasurer. During World War I most of what the mills made went to the government. In every war loan drive, Conestee beat its quota.
The Conestee Cotton Mills were among the oldest cotton mill businesses in upper South Carolina. The Charles family ran them for generations. Their forebear John Charles came from England about 1789 with three brothers. He settled in Greenville County about ten miles below Greenville.
