About Danielson, Connecticut
Danielson is a borough of 4,155 people in the town of Killingly, in Windham County. Before it took that name, the village went by Westfield, and also by West Killingly. When the Norwich and Worcester Railroad was finished through it in the late 1830s, the village became the depot that sent lumber, coal, groceries and dry goods out to all the country between Putnam and Norwich.
In 1854 the mill owners and merchants won a charter for a borough. It took in the settled land on both banks of the Quinebaug River, on the Brooklyn side as well as in Killingly. They called it Danielsonville for a leading mill-owning family, and the borough gave residents fire protection and built streets and sidewalks. Later charter changes cut away the Brooklyn side and shortened the name.
- Cotton mills since 1809The Quinebaug and the smaller, fast-flowing Five Mile River, once called the Assawauga, come together in Danielson. Builders first harnessed them in 1809 to drive small textile mills. By the 1830s the mills of Killingly together could spin more cotton than those of any other town in Connecticut.
- Named for Gen. James DanielsonWikipedia ties the borough's first name, Danielsonville, to Gen. James Danielson, who built the first house in the settlement. When the borough was renamed Danielson in 1895, its boundaries were set where they are today.
- Killingly's center since 1906Town government came to Main Street in 1906, when Killingly moved its offices, its town meetings and its court sessions into the Music Hall Block. From then on, Danielson was the political center of the whole town.
