About Moosup, Connecticut
Moosup is a village of 3,113 people in the town of Plainfield, in eastern Connecticut. It shares its name with the Moosup River, which runs west through Sterling and Plainfield before it joins the Quinebaug and was once known as Moosup's river.
The settlement was founded in 1689, a little more than ten years after Mohawks killed the sachem whose name it carries. By 1881, when the historian J. Hammond Trumbull wrote about the name, Moosup had grown into a manufacturing village with its own railroad station.
- Named for a Narragansett sachemMaussup, who lived from 1623 to 1676, was a sachem of the Narragansett people. He was better known as Pessicus, and he was a brother of Miantonomo. The river took his name first, and the village took it from the river.
- Cotton looms from 1880The cotton manufacturers Aldrich and Gray built Union Mills on South Main Street around 1880. Business peaked from 1910 to 1915, with 650 workers tending 1,475 looms and 48,500 spindles that made cotton print goods. The mills shut down in 1935. General Cotton Supply Co. of Fall River, Massachusetts, bought them but never ran them again.
- The Moose from MoosupWalt Dropo's parents came to Moosup from Mostar. His father, Savo, ran the family farm and also held a job in the village's textile mill. Walt played sandlot baseball here with his brothers Milton and George, went to Plainfield High School and the University of Connecticut, and then spent 13 years in the major leagues, starting with the Boston Red Sox in 1949. His size earned him the nickname that tied him to his hometown.
