About Plainfield Village, Connecticut

Plainfield Village is a village of 2,580 people in the southwestern part of the town of Plainfield. It lies south of Route 14, on the western side of I-395, and is the core of the Plainfield urban cluster. In 1770 the town's citizens founded an academy to prepare students for college, and after a great storm in 1815 they built a stone church in the village.

  • Rebuilt in stone, 1816In September 1815 a great gale tore across parts of New England and wrecked Plainfield's old meetinghouse. The congregation rebuilt in 1816, this time in stone, and townspeople gave what they had: cash, their own work, timber, stones, and teams of oxen or horses. The plans came from Ithiel Town, who lived from 1784 to 1844 and ranked among the top American architects of his time. The First Congregational Church of Plainfield is on the National Register.
  • Plainfield Academy, 1770The district schools in Plainfield could only take students so far. So in 1770 the town's citizens founded the Plainfield Academy to get young people ready for college. The school did well for many years, and at one point it drew more than 100 pupils from beyond the town's borders.
  • 2,580 people in 2020The Census Bureau counted 2,580 people in Plainfield Village in 2020, up from 2,557 in 2010. The village covers 1.7 square miles of the town of Plainfield.
