About Jewett City, Connecticut

Jewett City is a borough of 3,328 people inside the town of Griswold, in New London County. The place was first called Pachaug City, and it took its present name from Eliezer Jewett, who started a settlement here in 1771. Its post office opened on July 4, 1804, with John Johnson as the first postmaster.

After the Civil War, cotton textile companies in eastern Connecticut grew fewer and larger, and Jewett City became one of the region's big mill centers. The work brought French Canadian immigrants first and Polish immigrants after them, and both groups arrived in large numbers.

“Jewett City was first known as Pachaug City, and then was renamed to honor Eliezer Jewett, who began a settlement there in 1771 where he erected a saw mill, grist mill, fulling mill, clothiers shop with press and dye-kettle, and the first irrigation plant. He also conducted a tavern.”
