About Wauregan, Connecticut
In 1853 a company formed to make cotton goods here. The legislature incorporated it as Wauregan Mills, using the old native name of the place, which means Pleasant Valley. The first mill went up in 1853 and 1854, and families then began to settle around it.
James S. Atwood bought the mill from Amos Lockwood in 1858. He wanted a model village where his workers could live in good homes close to their jobs. Atwood quadrupled the size of the factory. The company built 104 houses holding 255 apartments, plus a store, a firehouse and a library.
