About Ellington, Connecticut
Ellington is a town of 16,426 people in Tolland County, Connecticut. Native people called the place Weexskashuck, the Great Marsh, and Windsor bought the land in 1671. For decades, settlers from Windsor walked past the marsh because they believed the low, wet ground was unhealthy. Samuel Pinney, a surveyor, finally settled there in 1717, and in 1730 the settlement still had only eleven families.
Rev. John McKinstry, a graduate of Edinburgh, came as the first minister in 1733 and was paid forty pounds a year plus his firewood. When the parish raised its first meetinghouse in 1739, people said every man in Ellington could sit on the frame's east sill at once. Ellington went with East Windsor when that town split from Windsor in 1768, and in May 1786 it was incorporated as a town of its own.
“Ellington is beautiful. It might be just a little quiet in winter, but at this season it is great. There's a glorious silence there.”
- Father Brockway's fallCol. Samuel Belcher of Hartford built Ellington's second church in 1804 for about $7,000. During construction its pastor, Rev. Diodate Brockway, fell sixty-five feet climbing toward the cupola, leaving him lame for life. He preached the 1806 dedication sermon from a chair and served the church fifty years.
- From rye fields to the ShulEarly Ellington grew rye for nearby distilleries, sometimes in hundred-acre fields, and by the 1890s farmers turned to tobacco, corn, potatoes and fruit. In 1906 Yiddish-speaking Jewish farmers from Russia and Eastern Europe, settled by Baron Maurice de Hirsch's Jewish Colonization Association, founded Congregation Knesseth Israel. The association helped pay for their Colonial Revival synagogue in 1913.
- Headlights at Hyde FieldOn New Year's Day 1967, a pilot with engine trouble couldn't find a runway in fog so thick that people could see only 200 feet. Resident State Trooper Lionel Labreche of the Connecticut State Police gathered dozens of residents at Hyde Field, the town's airstrip, which had no lights. They lined the runway with their cars and switched on the headlights, the pilot came down safely, and the rescue made national news.
- A boy's roadside stoneA stone in the southwest corner of town is one of the oldest roadside memorials in America. It marks where nine-year-old Samuel Knight died on Nov 8, 1812, when a cart wheel rolled over his head. It wasn't Ellington's first marker of its kind: after John Aborns was killed by lightning in 1768, his brother set up a slab at the spot.
