About Broad Brook, Connecticut

Broad Brook is a community of 3,998 people in the town of East Windsor, Hartford County, and it takes its name from the stream along its northern edge. Within the first quarter of the 19th century, the brook already powered a gristmill, a sawmill and a tannery. Two men named Phelps, Epaphras L. and Bethuel, began buying up those sites in the 1830s, along with their dams and water rights, and formed the Phelps Manufacturing Co. to make woolen cloth.

In the late 1840s the Phelps firm ran into money trouble, and the newly organized Broad Brook Company took over the mill. That company made woolen cloth here for more than a century, and its last day of operations came on February 22, 1954.

  • Cloth for two warsDuring the Civil War the Broad Brook Company sold great quantities of woolen goods to the Union Army. The mill did it again in World War II, turning out large amounts of cloth for the U.S. armed forces.
  • The flood of 1869In the autumn of 1869 a great flood, most likely from a seasonal hurricane, rushed down Broad Brook. It wiped out every dam and bridge along the stream, starting upstream of the mill and running all the way down to the Scantic River. The dam that now stands at the bridge was built after the flood and finished in 1870.
  • Stone mills on Main StreetThe Broad Brook Company built its factory of stone, an unusual choice for a mill in central Connecticut. Its row of three five-story masonry buildings lines Main Street, and the complex is listed on the National Register as the Broad Brook Company Factory Complex.
