About Hazardville, Connecticut

Hazardville, home to 6,870 people at the 2020 census, is part of the town of Enfield in Hartford County. It grew up as a mill village built around gunpowder, with the Scantic River supplying the water power. In 1835 Allen Loomis opened a small black powder mill in a spot then known as Powder Hollow.

Investors later bought the business, and Colonel Augustus George Hazard became its principal owner. Under him it became the Hazard Powder Company, and it bought 500 acres along the Scantic in Powder Hollow. Gunpowder was dangerous work, so the company took many precautions against explosions. Residents of Enfield's west end then met and passed a motion naming their village Hazardville to honor the Colonel.

  • Powder for the UnionWhen the Civil War broke out, the Hazardville powder business had reached a value of a million dollars, and its main works at Hazardville and Scitico counted about 125 buildings. All through the war, Hazard stood with Du Pont and with Laflin and Rand of Saugerties, New York, as one of the three main powder suppliers to Union forces. At its peak the hollow held 200 buildings, and the mills could turn out six tons a day.
  • A 1,075-acre historic districtIn 1980 a 1,075-acre area in and around the village joined the National Register as the Hazardville Historic District. It centers on what's left of the powder works, including industrial archaeological remains on both banks of the Scantic River.
  • Powder Hollow todayPowder Hollow, where the Scantic once powered the mills, now holds one parcel of Scantic River State Park.
