About Thompsonville, Connecticut

Thompsonville is a village of 8,514 people in the town of Enfield, on the east bank of the Connecticut River. It takes its name from Orrin Thompson, who dammed Freshwater Brook in 1828 and opened his first carpet mill there the next year, the White Mill, with skilled hand-loom weavers brought over from Scotland.

The land around the mill was nearly empty when the work began, so the company put up a row of small one-story cottages to house its workers, and people called them Scottish Row. The first looms wove cheap flat ingrain carpet, and over time the mill moved into finer grades such as three-ply ingrain and loop brussels. By 1846, 230 looms were running, and by 1850 the mill employed some 650 people.

  • From Enfield to New YorkOrrin Thompson grew up in Enfield, clerked in Hartford and later ran his own store in town. In 1821 he became a wholesale merchant in New York City, trading mostly in carpets shipped from the British Isles. When those sales grew fivefold over several years, he saw that carpets could be made at home. Backed by his New York trading house and technical help from a Scottish supplier, he returned to Enfield and built his mill.
  • 13,500 workers in the 1920sThe company was at its peak during the 1920s, when it went by the name Bigelow-Hartford Carpet Company. It had 13,500 people on the payroll in Thompsonville, and at the time its mills formed the biggest carpet complex in the United States.
  • Carpet until 1971The carpet mills were Enfield's largest single industry and one of the biggest in Connecticut for well over a century. Weaving finally stopped in 1971, by which time most of the country's carpet making had moved to the South.
  • Connecticut's carpet founderThe Connecticut Historical Society credits Orrin Thompson with founding the state's carpet industry, and the section of Enfield that grew up around his mills still carries his name.
