About Enfield, Connecticut
Enfield is a town of 42,141 people in Hartford County, where the Connecticut River meets the Massachusetts border. The Podunk people lived here first, and the name of one of their villages, Scitico, is still the name of a section of town. In 1679 Robert and John Pease came down from Salem, Massachusetts, to farm the good soil, and they got through their first winter in a shelter cut into a hillside.
Massachusetts incorporated the settlement on May 16, 1683, as the Freshwater Plantation, after Freshwater Brook, and five years later the townspeople bought the land from Notatuck, a Podunk man, for 25 pounds. Around 1700 the town was renamed Enfield, for the English town of that name in Middlesex. The eastern part split off as Somers in 1734. In 1749 a lawsuit showed that a surveyor's mistake had put Enfield inside Massachusetts, and the town became part of Connecticut.
- Sinners in 1741On July 8, 1741, Jonathan Edwards rode over from Northampton to preach in Enfield's small meetinghouse on the green, a room 40 by 45 feet. Neighbors had prayed through the night before, afraid the town cared too little for its souls. Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God was the sermon he gave that day, and an 1818 history says the crying grew so loud that Edwards stopped to ask for quiet.
- 74 men march for BostonA rider brought word of the fight at Lexington on the following Sunday, while the town was at worship. As the story goes, Thomas Abbe found a drum and beat the long roll around the meetinghouse, ending the service. Early the next morning Nathaniel Terry led 74 men off toward Boston. The town then had about 1,400 people. Captain Abbey's statue, carved in marble, was unveiled on the green on November 4, 1916.
- Carpets in ThompsonvilleOrrin Thompson dammed Freshwater Brook in 1828 and started a carpet company, bringing skilled weavers over from Scotland. The village that took his name had about 800 people by 1836, with 120 looms weaving 800 yards of carpet a day. The business became the Bigelow-Hartford Carpet Mills, which employed more than 13,000 people in the 1920s.
- Gunpowder in Powder HollowIn 1835 Allen Loomis started making powder in a small mill beside the Scantic River. The business later became the Hazard Powder Company, named for Colonel Augustus George Hazard, where John Mathewson installed the first steam machinery for gunpowder brought to America. The mill turned out 1,200 pounds a day at the time of the Civil War. Over 60 people died in explosions before the work ended in 1913.
- Shaker garden seedsJoseph Meacham was born in Enfield and served as pastor of a Baptist church in the town's northeast. He later joined the Shakers among their earliest American converts and became the leader of the whole movement. A Shaker society took shape here around 1788. Its members reportedly sold garden seeds in small packets before anyone else, as early as 1802. The community, the only Shaker settlement in Connecticut, lasted until 1917.
