About East Windsor, Connecticut

East Windsor is a town of 11,190 people in Hartford County, set along the Connecticut River's east bank. In 1636 William Pynchon, who founded Springfield, put up a warehouse below the Enfield Falls, the point where seagoing ships had to unload. Most of the land around it belonged to Windsor, but Scantic grew into a parish of its own in 1752, and on May 10, 1768, Windsor's east side became the town of East Windsor.

For generations, freight came upriver on sloops and was shifted onto flatboats at Warehouse Point. That trade ended in 1809, when the first bridge at Hartford stopped the larger sloops from getting through. Tobacco kept the village going, and a tobacco warehouse stood there by 1825. In 1845 South Windsor was split off, leaving East Windsor with the northern half it holds today.

“When the Scantic meeting-house was built, near where it now stands, it was only a mile and a half from The Street, and yet the dwellers along that thoroughfare complained that it was too far off in the woods.”
Memorial History of Hartford County, 1886
  • The drummer at the woodpileNews of Lexington reached town in April 1775 while the young drummer Asahel Stiles was splitting wood near today's Broad Brook. Family tradition says he sank his axe in the log, leaped the fence, threw his drum over his shoulder and ran to join the company gathering north of the Scantic meetinghouse. The next day the company set out for Roxbury.
  • Rye fields and ginJohn Warner Barber figured in 1836 that the town had grown 70,000 bushels of rye in one season, and much of that grain went into gin. Barber thought distilling was finished, but it returned. Through the 1880s and 1890s the state register kept listing large amounts of rye gin from Warehouse Point, and from Melrose as well by 1897.
  • A dinosaur in 1818Solomon Ellsworth Jr. was blasting out a well beside his house when he turned up some strange bones. They went to Yale, where they were eventually identified as an Anchisaurus. Yale still holds them today. His family's house, the Ellsworth Homestead, is still standing on Rye Street close to the South Windsor line.
  • The Broad Brook millThe mill at the Mill Pond waterfall began in 1832, and in the late 1840s it was reorganized under the name Broad Brook Company. Around 1900 it had 300 workers weaving woolens, and by the 1930s it was making car upholstery cloth. It shut down in 1954. On Memorial Day weekend in 1986, fire destroyed the old mill during renovations, and the smoke could be seen from Hartford.
  • Junius Morgan's schoolThe brick East Windsor Academy went up in Scantic in 1817 as a private school, and Junius Morgan, father of J. P. Morgan, studied there. Over the years the building was used as a parish hall, then as a school again, and later as apartments. It joined the National Register in 1998, and today it houses the historical society's museum.
