About Southwood Acres, Connecticut
Southwood Acres is a suburban neighborhood of 7,879 people in the town of Enfield, in northern Hartford County. It covers 4.1 square miles, reaching from Interstate 91 east to the Scantic River and from the East Windsor town line north to South Road. Enfield's population grew at an explosive pace in the 1950s, and many of the new homes went up here. St. Bernard's parish took in many of the Catholic families who moved to Southwood Acres in those years, along with newcomers to nearby Green Manorville.
- A parish for young familiesSouthern Enfield had no Roman Catholic church of its own until September 16, 1965, when Holy Family Church was formed, drawing in part from St. Patrick's parish. Its name came from the many young families who lived inside its boundaries. The parish chose land on Simon Road because the site sat near the center of them.
- Mass at the high schoolWhile the new church was being built, the Holy Family congregation held its regular services in Enfield High School. The building on Simon Road was finished three years after the parish began, and it was dedicated on November 9, 1968.
