About Rockville, Connecticut

Rockville is a village of 7,920 people in the town of Vernon, in Tolland County. In 1726 Samuel Grant gave up his Bolton farm in exchange for 500 acres in that town's northern part, and for about a century the settlement that grew here had no name. Starting around 1740, farmers harnessed the Hockanum River to run a grist mill, a sawmill, an oil mill and even a distillery.

In March 1821 Colonel Francis McLean bought land from Grant's heirs beside the Rock, a natural stone dam that made a high falls on the river. With George and Allyn Kellogg, Ralph Talcott and $16,000 in capital, he dammed the Hockanum and built the Rock Mill, its first woolen mill. The river falls 283 feet over a mile and a half, and every cascade made room for one more mill. The mill villages grew together until Rockville became a city in 1889, and it has been consolidated with Vernon since 1965.

“an amateurish notice was posted on the Rock Mill announcing a public meeting in the lecture room of the village to decide in a democratic way the most suitable name for the vicinity”

  • The Rock Mill at workBy 1823 the Rock Mill, 80 by 30 feet, was in full operation making blue and blue-mix satinet, and power looms came in 1826. Workers followed, and by 1836 the village had 440 people in 61 families.
  • Named in 1837Mail still arrived by stagecoach from Vernon Center, so residents gathered to choose a name and win a post office of their own. Frankfort, Vernon Falls, Grantville and Hillborough were all proposed, but the pick of boarding house keeper Simon Chapman won out, drawn from the local saying "Going to the Rock." The post office opened in 1842.
  • Cloth for two presidentsRockville mills wove the cloth for President William McKinley's inaugural suit and for Theodore Roosevelt's in 1905. Much of that fame traces to George Sykes, who arrived in Rockville in 1866, at 26, to manage the mill of the Hockanum Company. As the century turned, he was president of the Hockanum, Springville and New England mills, and at the 1900 Paris exposition each of the three won a gold medal.
  • Mill owners lived downtownRockville's mill owners usually built their homes in the downtown, and the houses along Elm and Park streets and a single block of Prospect Street look out on little Talcott Park. Their styles run from early Greek Revival through Gothic Revival and Italianate to the eclectic designs of the late Victorian years. The buildings around Central Park still show the wealth that wool brought and the town's nineteenth century hope of ranking among Connecticut's leading cities.
