About Glasgow, Delaware
Glasgow is a community of 15,288 people in New Castle County, Delaware. At the time of the American Revolution the place went by Aikentown, after Matthew Aiken, who kept a tavern there. Scottish settlers later gave it a new name, Glasgow, after the city in Scotland, and the old tavern name survives in the Aiken's Tavern Historic District.
- Mechanics Row, around 1800Around 1800, local tradesmen got homes of their own in Mechanics Row, a set of dwellings joined together in one line. The row belongs to the Aiken's Tavern Historic District, which also takes in a cemetery and the ground where the Glasgow Methodist Church once stood.
- Home of Hodgson Vo-TechHodgson Vo-Tech High School, run by the county's vocational-technical district, stands in Glasgow. Local students once went to Newark School District schools, but that district joined the New Castle County School District in 1978, which was split into four in 1981. Most of Glasgow now falls in the Christina School District, home of Glasgow High School.
