About Hayfield, Virginia

Hayfield is a community of 4,154 people in Fairfax County, Virginia, about 2 miles southeast of Franconia. Around 1761, George Washington is thought to have bought the ground here to enlarge his Mount Vernon estate. He used the land for growing hay, and the name Hayfield came from that use.

  • Sold to Lund WashingtonWhen George Washington came home from the Revolutionary War, he was in debt. To ease it, he sold 360 acres from the western part of his land here to Lund Washington, his cousin, who also managed his plantation.
  • Hayfield Manor HouseOn the acres he bought from his cousin, Lund Washington and his wife put up a home called Hayfield Manor House. It stood there until 1917, when a fire destroyed it.
  • A school named for hayHayfield Secondary School now stands on the land Washington is believed to have bought, and the school carries the name of his old hayfield.
