About Groveton, Virginia
Groveton is a census-designated place of 15,725 people in southeastern Fairfax County, just south of the city of Alexandria. In 1880 it was still a farming community, and that year its first congregation began meeting in the original Groveton Schoolhouse, at Popkins Lane and Richmond Highway. It was the first place of worship for local farm families anywhere between Alexandria and Woodlawn Plantation.
U.S. Route 1, known here as Richmond Highway, cuts through Groveton's built-up east side and ties it to the region. Old Town Alexandria lies 3 miles up the road to the northeast and Washington, D.C., 10 miles away, while Woodbridge sits 13 miles to the southwest.
- The county's largest parkHuntley Meadows Park, in the southwest part of Groveton, is the largest park in all of Fairfax County.
- Groveton High School, 1959Groveton High School opened to serve the community in 1959. In the mid-1980s it took a new name, West Potomac High School, and it now serves Fort Hunt as well.
