About Hybla Valley, Virginia
Hybla Valley is a community of 16,319 people in Fairfax County, just south of Alexandria. The area was once part of the Mason family's Hollin Hall plantation, which later passed through several owners, and Thomson Dairy started up on the land in the late 19th century. In time, Sherwood Farm, Hybla Valley Farm, Popkins Farm and other dairies were divided into suburban neighborhoods.
The west side kept growing, and Mount Vernon Plaza was built there in 2002. Since the early 2000s the Hispanic population has grown quickly, and by the 2010 census Hispanic residents outnumbered African American residents.
- Gum Springs, founded 1833West Ford was a freed slave, a skilled carpenter and a manager at Mount Vernon, George Washington's plantation. Hanna Washington, George Washington's sister-in-law, left him land, and he sold it to build Gum Springs, a 214-acre farming settlement. By 1866 only one free Black farmer in Fairfax County was richer than Ford, and Gum Springs grew into the center of an African-American community through the 1800s.
- A state marker in 1991Gum Springs grew up along the road that is now Route 1, Richmond Highway. In 1991 Virginia's Department of Historic Resources put up a historical marker there, Marker Number E-04.
- The world's largest airport, plannedAs the dairy farms became neighborhoods, planners began work on two fields, the George Washington Air Junction and Hybla Valley Airport. Backers hoped the civilian airport would be the biggest anywhere on earth, but the plan was given up. Its old dairy land is now Huntley Meadows Park, just west of Hybla Valley.
