About Helena, Alabama

Helena is a city of 20,914 people in Shelby and Jefferson counties, where Buck Creek meets the Cahaba River south of Birmingham. Settlers arrived in the mid-1830s and called the place Cove, a post office opened in 1849, and in 1856 the settlement became Hillsboro. In the 1860s a railroad spur reached the local coal mines, and a rolling mill went up to make iron for the Confederacy. Union cavalry under Gen. James H. Wilson burned the mill in March 1865.

After the war the Louisville & Nashville Railroad built a depot here and called it Helena Station, and the town that grew around it slowly took in Hillsboro. The rolling mill reopened in 1873, fed by nearby coal mines that also supplied Birmingham's growing iron and steel works. Helena was incorporated in 1877 and opened its first school around 1878. Mistakes later turned up in the original papers, so the city incorporated again in 1917.

  • Named for Helen LeePeter Boyle, an engineer laying out a new rail line, met Helen Lee and courted her. He named the station that served the rolling mill in her honor, and in time the whole town took the name Helena from the station.
  • Rebuilt after Wilson's RaidWilson's troops passed through on March 30, 1865, wrecking much of the new industry and many homes. Within a few years the Eureka Company had coke ovens running, by 1870, and Rufus Cobb, later a two-term governor, backed the mill's rebuilding. Joseph Squire surveyed the town in 1873. By 1880 Helena had six mercantile stores, a drugstore, two hotels and several boarding houses, and the L&N added a rail yard.
  • The tornado of 1933Helena was already struggling: the mines were winding down, the steel mill, then called Conner Steel, had moved to Birmingham, and the rolling mill closed in 1923. Around 3 AM on May 5, 1933, a tornado tore through the center of town, killing 13, destroying more than 100 homes and tipping over railroad cars. The city recovered, and late in the twentieth century it grew fast as Birmingham's suburbs spread south into Shelby County.
  • Buck Creek Festival since 2001Helena holds the Buck Creek Festival each May, on the second weekend of the month. What started as a single day now runs for two, and it draws an average crowd of 15,000. Visitors hear over 10 musical acts, browse the booths of over 100 vendors and watch a rubber duck race with 2,000-plus entries. Over the years, more than $140,000 from the event has gone to charity.
