About Homosassa, Florida
Homosassa is a community of 2,299 people in Citrus County, on the Homosassa River. The river begins at a large spring and flows west through marshes and islands to the Gulf of Mexico, and the original settlement grew up on its south bank. A Seminole village called Homosassa stood at or near the present town in 1836.
In 1851 David Levy Yulee, Florida's first United States Senator, began a sugar plantation of about 5,000 acres on the river. He bought the mill's machinery from a New York firm, shipped it south by sailing vessel and hauled it inland. About 1,000 enslaved people worked the land while Yulee lived mostly in Fernandina, and his steam mill made sugar, syrup and molasses until 1864. During the Civil War a Union force came up the river and burned Yulee's mansion on Tigertail Island, but the mill sat too far inland to reach. When the war ended in 1865, Yulee went to prison, the enslaved workers gained their freedom, and the plantation was left empty.
- Wild pepper or smoking creekOne reading traces the name to Seminole and Creek words for a spot where wild pepper grows. Other people prefer smoking creek, after the thick mist that rises off the warm springs and river when the weather turns cool. Wikipedia gives two more meanings, river of fishes and pepper ridge.
- Sweet oranges on sour rootsBesides sugar cane, the Yulee plantation raised cotton and citrus. Its groves were early in Florida to bud sweet orange trees onto sour orange rootstock. The mill's molasses went into making rum. What survives of the mill is now the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park, and the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins are on the National Register.
- Manatees at the Fish BowlManatees gather at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park for the warm spring water. Visitors watch them, along with schools of fish, from an underwater viewing platform called the Fish Bowl, set in the spring where the Homosassa River starts. The park is also home to Lu, a hippopotamus known for his roles in many movies.
- Tarpon on two riversThe Homosassa and Halls rivers both run through the community, and manatees often come up near the waterfront restaurants and bars. Sport Fishing Magazine has named Homosassa one of the top spots anywhere for landing Atlantic tarpon.
