About Lakeland North, Washington

Lakeland North is a community of 13,663 people in southwestern King County, with Auburn on its east side, Federal Way to the south and west, and Kent to the north. Star Lake lies in its northern part and Lake Dolloff in the south, and in 2008 Auburn annexed part of the community.

The first road through this ground was Old Military Road, laid out around 1856. Later roads and a fast electric rail line brought crowds of visitors, and Star Lake grew into a summer getaway for people from Seattle and Tacoma.

  • Old Military Road, about 1856Built around 1856, Old Military Road ran north from Fort Steilacoom, passed Star Lake and continued on to Seattle and Fort Lawton. It was the first road to cross the area.
  • Star Lake summersBy 1900 a road connected Star Lake with Redondo. The Seattle-Tacoma Interurban line was completed in 1901, giving people a quick, easy trip between the two cities, and the visitors it carried made Star Lake a favorite place to spend the summer.
