About Kent, Washington

Kent is a city of 136,588 people in King County, 15 miles southeast of Seattle in the Green River valley. Samuel Russell claimed land southeast of today's downtown in the spring of 1853. The settlement was called White River at first and later Titusville, for the early settler James Henry Titus. By the late 1870s farmers had cleared much of the valley and planted hops, which sold high because a blight had hurt the crop in Europe.

The hop growers needed a way to ship their crop, so work began on a rail branch to the Northern Pacific in 1883. The line was neglected for years and became reliable only in 1887, when the railroad moved its terminus from Tacoma to Seattle. The first plat was filed in July 1888 by John Alexander and Ida Guiberson. On May 28, 1890, with 793 people, Kent became the first King County city outside Seattle to incorporate. Aphids destroyed most of the hops in 1891, and the crash of 1893 ruined many farmers, but the town survived.

“We'll call this station Kent, after Kenty County, England where they raise nothing but hops.”

  • Carnation milk from 1899Once the hops failed, the first major business in Kent was the Pacific Coast Condensed Milk Company, started by Elbridge A. Stuart. On September 6, 1899, its plant packed its first cases of condensed milk. The company later did well under the name Carnation Milk Company.
  • Kent farmers and Pike PlaceKent growers who hauled produce into Seattle were cheated by wholesale dealers who kept prices high. Their troubles led to the opening of Pike Place Market on August 17, 1907, where farmers could sell straight to shoppers.
  • Lettuce Capital of the WorldKent earned that title in the 1920s. During the Great Depression, in 1934, the town held a lettuce festival that drew more than 25,000 visitors. Floats made of lettuce rolled through town, a lettuce queen was crowned, and 5,000 people ate what was billed as the world's largest salad.
  • Japanese farmers until 1942By 1920 Issei farmers leasing Kent Valley land provided half of Seattle's fresh milk and more than 70 percent of Western Washington's fruit and vegetables. Under Executive Order 9066, families were sent out of town by train between May 8 and May 11, 1942, and the government gave 1,600 acres of their farmland to other farmers. Few returned after the war.
  • Moon buggies on lettuce fieldsThe Howard A. Hanson Dam at Eagle Gorge, finished in 1962, ended the Green River's major floods, and industry spread across the valley floor. The city covered one square mile in 1953 and 12.7 square miles by 1960. The Boeing Kent Space Center was dedicated on October 24, 1964, and the Lunar Roving Vehicles for the Apollo program were built there.
