About Lincolnia, Virginia
Lincolnia is a community of 22,922 people in eastern Fairfax County, with the city of Alexandria along its eastern edge. It began after the Civil War as a settlement of freed slaves, and for more than 100 years it remained one of the first African American communities in the county.
- A farming communityAccording to the Office of Historic Alexandria, most Lincolnia families ran farms. They kept chickens and dairy cows and grew fruits and vegetables.
- A schoolhouse of its ownDuring segregation, Lincolnia had its own schoolhouse. The old building still stands today as part of the Lincolnia Senior Center.
- Integrated in 1962The school was integrated in 1962 under court-ordered busing. Its African American students were bused to other schools, and white students were bused in.
