About Maple Heights-Lake Desire, Washington
Maple Heights-Lake Desire is a community of 3,873 people in King County, about 6 miles southeast of Renton. Lake Desire lies in its western part and Spring Lake in its eastern part, while State Route 169 runs along the north through the Cedar River valley. For decades the high ground between the two lakes was worked for lumber, until King County turned it into public open space.
- Timberland turned parklandTimber companies once owned the woods between the lakes, and loggers cut them bare more than once, starting in the late 1800s and finishing in the mid-1960s. King County later added the old timber lands to its public open space as Spring Lake/Lake Desire Park, a 370-acre forest with three miles of trails. A few legacy trees escaped the cutting and are now over 100 years old.
- The climb up Echo MountainA bald rocky outcrop rises inside the park, and the Echo Peak trail leads to the top of 900-foot Echo Mountain. From there, hikers look out over Lake Desire, Spring Lake and the Cascade foothills.
- Labrador tea and bog laurelThe park also holds a peat bog. Each season the Washington Native Plant Society leads tours through the park to find rare native plants such as Labrador tea and bog laurel.
