About Medulla, Florida
Medulla is a community of 10,871 people in western Polk County, between the Lakeland and Mulberry city limits. Together with neighboring Lakeland Highlands, it makes up much of the unincorporated south side of Lakeland, and its homes carry Lakeland addresses.
The settlement was called Spring Hill until 1881, when it got a post office under the name Medulla. That office stayed open until 1909. Rapid growth came much later: in the 1990s and early 2000s the large deed-restricted neighborhood of Deer Brooke was built here, and many smaller subdivisions followed it.
- A name from anatomyThe name Medulla came from the settlement's role as a link on the stagecoach line between Bartow and Fort Meade. People compared it to the medulla oblongata, which sits low in the brain and joins it to the spinal cord.
- The store that moved to LakelandAfter the railroad arrived in 1883, storekeeper L. M. Ballard loaded up his stock at Medulla, postal fixtures included, and hauled it all to Lake Wire without first asking the U.S. government. Lake Wire soon took the name Lakeland, the city that now sits just north of Medulla.
- 10,871 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 10,871 people in Medulla, which covers 5.7 square miles, nearly all of it land.
