About Montclair, California

Montclair is a city of 37,865 people in San Bernardino County, on the Los Angeles County line about 30 miles east of Los Angeles. The Serrano people were the first known to live here. Their village stood beside a creek they called Arroyo de los Alisos, now San Antonio Creek, which ran where Mills Avenue marks the city's western edge today.

A Township of Marquette was founded here in 1897, and in 1900 surveyors laid out a 1,000-acre tract called Monte Vista. For the next fifty years most of the land was planted in citrus orchards. Houses spread across the tract after World War II, and Monte Vista became a city on April 25, 1956. The Post Office then refused to open an office there, because Northern California already had a Monte Vista. To settle the conflict, the city took the name Montclair on April 8, 1958.

  • Narod in 1907In 1907 settlers started a small community called Narod just south of the Monte Vista tract, at a time when the area was still mostly orchards.
  • A hub for trains and busesThe Montclair Transit Center links Metrolink trains with Foothill Transit and Omnitrans buses. From there, riders can reach the downtowns of both Los Angeles and San Bernardino, along with the stops between them. The Silver Streak rapid bus stops at the center and outside the Montclair Place mall.
  • From The Association to the majorsTerry Kirkman, born in 1939, sang and played wind instruments for The Association. Soccer players Nick Rimando, born in 1979, and Danny Califf, born in 1980, are also from Montclair, along with pitcher Matt Wise, born in 1975, who later became a bullpen coach for the Los Angeles Angels, and Vince Velasquez, born in 1992, who pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies.
