About Montebello, California

Montebello is a city of 62,640 people in Los Angeles County, 8 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The Tongva people lived along the Rio Hondo long before the Franciscan fathers Angel Somera and Pedro Cambon founded Mission San Gabriel ArcΓ‘ngel here on September 8, 1771. Six years later a destructive flood drove the mission north to present-day San Gabriel, and the abandoned first site became known as Mission Vieja.

After the Civil War, Alessandro Repetto, an immigrant from Genoa, owned about 5,000 acres here. When he died in 1885, his brother sold the land for $60,000 to five Los Angeles businessmen, among them Harris Newmark. In May 1899 Newmark and his nephew Kaspare Cohn laid out a town on 1,200 acres of their share, with a water system planned on the advice of William Mulholland. The townsite by the railroad was called Newmark until 1920, when city leaders took Mulholland's idea and renamed it Montebello. The city incorporated on October 16, 1920.

“The City of Flowers With an Oil Well Payroll.”
Wikipedia
  • Oil in the hills, 1917The Standard Oil Company struck oil on the Baldwin and Temple properties in the Montebello hills in 1917. Oil wells soon took the place of farm fields, and the find eventually supplied one-eighth of California's crude oil. Wells kept pumping in the hills for sixty years.
  • A flower show in 1912Before the oil boom, Montebello farms grew flowers, berries, fruit and vegetables. The Montebello Woman's Club sponsored the town's first public flower show in 1912, held in the high school auditorium on Whittier Boulevard, and the club joined the National Register in 1995. A red poinsettia still sits at the center of the city seal.
  • A battle in 1847On January 8, 1847, U.S. forces won the Battle of RΓo San Gabriel, fought partly on land that is now Montebello, Whittier and Pico Rivera. The victory gave the United States control of Los Angeles and Alta California in the Mexican-American War. Two cannons and a plaque honor the battle above the river at Bluff Road and Washington Boulevard.
  • The Sanchez Adobe of 1844The Juan Matias Sanchez Adobe went up in 1844 at the heart of old Rancho La Merced, in east Montebello. It is the oldest building still standing in the city, and it is now the centerpiece of Sanchez Adobe Park.
