About Monterey Park, California
Monterey Park is a city of 61,096 people in Los Angeles County, in the western San Gabriel Valley. The Tongva lived here for thousands of years, and the land later fell under Mission San Gabriel and then the Rancho San Antonio. After the Civil War, the Italian rancher Alessandro Repetto bought 5,000 acres of the rancho. Richard Garvey, an Army mail rider whose route crossed Monterey Pass, settled in the King's Hills, piped in spring water and built a 54-foot dam to make Garvey Lake. He sold land to pay his debts, and in 1906 Ramona Acres became the area's first subdivision.
In 1916 Pasadena, South Pasadena and Alhambra proposed a large sewage plant for the area, so the residents moved to form a city of their own. They approved cityhood on May 29, 1916, by 455 votes to 33. The new board at once banned sewage plants inside the city and chose the name Monterey Park, after an old government map that labeled the oak-covered hills as the Monterey Hills. In 1920 a large section on the south edge split off to become Montebello.
“The community is proud of its many old trees, which include the pepper, the California live-oak, pink-flowering white ironbark, Australian beech, Torrey pine, various types of palm, and several kinds of cork oak.”
- The first sealed chip bagIn 1926 Laura Scudder made the first sealed bag of potato chips near Atlantic Boulevard and Garvey Avenue. Her workers ironed sheets of wax paper into bags, filled them with chips and ironed the tops shut to keep them fresh, then delivered them to stores.
- Coyote PassBy 1920 Asian residents were growing potatoes and flowers and running nurseries in the Monterey Highlands. They built a road over the old Monterey Pass Trail to haul their crops to Los Angeles. The pass had no name and had served as a set for western movies until the pioneer Masami Abe called it Coyote Pass.
- The CascadesIn the late 1920s developer Peter N. Snyder planned Midwick View Estates as a garden community to rival Bel Air and Beverly Hills. Its center was El Encanto, a Spanish style building, with a fountain that spilled down the hillside in stepped pools. The Great Depression ended the plan, and the fountain is now Heritage Falls Park, known as the Cascades.
- First Suburban ChinatownAsian American families began moving here in the 1970s, many of them from Taiwan. In 1983 voters made Lily Lee Chen the first Chinese American woman to lead a U.S. city as mayor. By the 1990 census, Monterey Park was the first city in the continental United States where most people were of Asian descent, and Professor Timothy P. Fong called it the First Suburban Chinatown.
