About South San Gabriel, California
South San Gabriel is a census-designated place of 7,920 people in Los Angeles County, in the San Gabriel Valley. In 1938 this was a thousand-acre unincorporated district called Potrero Heights, set on high ground with a view across the fertile valley below.
Its land then held foothills, orchards, vineyards and dairies, along with herds of cattle and sheep. Ranches were being cut up into lots at the time, and the new subdivisions drew many newcomers out from the city.
- Two teachers, 94 pupilsIn 1938 the Potrero Heights School had two teachers for 94 boys and girls between the ages of six and fifteen. Instead of dividing the children into grades, the teachers ran it as an ungraded school.
- A telescope of their ownThe school's Astronomical Society caught on quickly, and its teachers wrote that the children's enthusiasm knew no bounds. By January 1938 several of the older pupils were grinding a five-inch lens, which was to go into a telescope the school was then building.
- Three school districtsSouth San Gabriel is divided among three school districts: Montebello Unified, Garvey and Alhambra Unified. One of the public schools that serve the community is Potrero Heights Elementary School, which sits outside any city in Los Angeles County.
