About Pawcatuck, Connecticut

Pawcatuck is a village of 5,433 people in the town of Stonington, in New London County. It sits on the Connecticut bank of the Pawcatuck River, and downtown Westerly, Rhode Island, lies just across the water.

Machine shops and textile mills once stood along both banks of the river. For many years a large share of the people in Pawcatuck and Westerly earned their living in those factories, and industry drove the growth of both communities.

  • Clarksville's thread millWilliam Clark's grandfather, James Clark, was the first to make thread by machine, in Paisley, Scotland, in 1810. In 1892 William built a cotton thread mill in Pawcatuck that ran entirely on steam. It stood at tidewater on a navigable stretch of the river, so barges could unload coal and cotton right at the mill. The neighborhood around it came to be called Clarksville, and the William Clark Company Thread Mill is now on the National Register.
  • Cottrell and BabcockC. B. Cottrell and Nathan Babcock started their company, Cottrell and Babcock, at Pawcatuck. The firm built printing presses, along with machinery for textile mills and woodworking shops.
  • Shipyards and mill housingAround Mechanic Street, a 147-acre area holds the sites of old shipyards and mills, together with the houses built for the people who worked in them.
